Breaking into the consulting industry can often seem daunting, especially for students. However, as a Telfer student, you have access to a wealth of resources and a supportive community that can help you stand out to recruiters, regardless of your career path. In this guide, I’ll share the experiences and tips that not only helped me enter the consulting industry, but also enriched my overall student experience at the University of Ottawa.
Getting involved in student clubs and organizations is one of the best ways to enhance your university experience, make yourself stand out to recruiters, and build a network of like-minded peers. At Telfer, there are numerous clubs that provide valuable opportunities for professional development, networking, and hands-on experience.
One of the student club's that I joined was the Telfer Competitions Committee (TCCT). This club is dedicated to providing career-advancing opportunities to students by helping them participate in case competitions. A case competition is an event where students come together to present solutions to real-world business problems. These competitions are increasingly popular among both BCom and MBA students, and have allowed me to gain transferable skills relevant to the consulting industry.
In addition to competing, I took on leadership roles within TCCT, serving as the VP of Merchandise last year and as the Co-Captain for the Jeux de Commerce Central (JDCC) this year. These roles allowed me to hone my skills in public speaking, slide building, and problem-solving, while also enhancing my ability to work effectively in a team—all of which are crucial for a successful career in the consulting industry.
The Microprogram Management Consulting
I would argue that Telfer's Microprogram Management Consulting is the most valuable extracurricular activity at the University of Ottawa to unlock opportunities in the consulting industry.
Formerly known as the Profession of Management Consulting Program (PMCP), the Microprogram Management Consulting provides 15 Telfer undergraduate students with the opportunity to network and learn with industry professionals, undertake a consulting project, and receive valuable mentorship from Certified Management Consultants (CMCs/FCMCs).
The program also helps student meet certain requirements CMC program, which will help you move towards qualifying for a prestigious CMC global designation.
Applying to industry events and programs hosted by consulting firms is an excellent way to gain practical experience, build your network, and enhance your resume. These opportunities provide a firsthand look at the consulting industry and allow you to showcase your skills to potential employers.
Community Consulting Projects
Student pro-bono/community consulting projects involve students working on real-world consulting assignments for non-profit organizations or small businesses, typically free of charge. These projects are designed to provide students with hands-on experience while delivering valuable services to the community. Many prestigious consulting firms, such as Accenture, Deloitte, and PwC, host these initiatives, offering students the opportunity to develop their skills and gain industry exposure while contributing to meaningful causes.
Personally, I participated in the Accenture Community Consulting Project (CCP) in 2023 where I worked in a team of four to provide strategy consulting services to United Way Eastern Ontario (UWEO), a local not-for-profit organization. During this project, I was responsible for leading stakeholder interviews, conducting research and delivering strategic recommendations in our final deliverable.
Case Competitions
Many consulting firms host case competitions for students, offering opportunities to tackle real-world business challenges, interact with professionals, and gain insights into the industry. Forming a team and participating in these external competitions is an excellent way for students to gain hands-on experience, network with industry leaders, and potentially secure internships. Companies such as Deloitte, McKinsey and IBM often host these sorts of events.
This year, I had the privilege of being selected from hundreds of applicants as one of the 25 students chosen to compete in the Défi McKinsey Montréal 2024.
During this two day event, I had the exciting opportunity to work in teams to tackle a live case for a not-for-profit organization, learn about McKinsey's problem-solving approach and engage with other highly talented students.
Preparing your resume and honing your interview skills are crucial steps in breaking into consulting. Below are some key strategies that helped me secure an internship in the consulting industry.
When making your resume, take advantage of the many opportunities available to enhance it. Resources such as the Telfer Career Centre and the University of Ottawa Consulting Association (UOCA) often host resume workshops and feedback sessions. Additionally, don't hesitate to reach out to your network; many members are often willing to review your resume and offer constructive feedback.
Before my interview, I asked Google and ChatGPT for the most common consulting interview questions. I used these results to practice my responses in preparation for the behavioural interview.
Networking is another key component. Schedule coffee chats with industry professionals to gain insights and advice. Attend networking events and use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with consultants, showing genuine interest and asking thoughtful questions during these interactions.
Additionally, stay informed about industry trends and developments by reading relevant publications and following consulting firms’ blogs and social media. By focusing on these areas, you can present yourself as a well-prepared, knowledgeable, and highly motivated candidate, ready to take on the challenges of the consulting industry.
Breaking into the consulting industry may seem challenging, but as a Telfer student, you have the resources and support to succeed. Participate in student clubs, engage in industry events, and enhance your resume and interview skills to stand out to recruiters and prepare for a rewarding career in consulting.
