Balancing academics and extracurricular activities can be challenging, but with the right strategies, it's achievable and highly rewarding. As a Telfer student, you have access to various resources and a supportive community that can help you succeed. Here are some tips I used to effectively balance academic studies and extracurricular involvement.
Using a calendar app like Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook can help you keep track of your classes, work schedule, meetings, deliverables and other commitments. Digital calendars can be accessed from any devices, allowing you to consistently keep track of a busy schedule. Don't be afraid to schedule time for yourself and/or study sessions!
This tip has significantly improved my academic performance by helping me prioritize tasks and allocate time efficiently. At the beginning of each semester, when I receive the course syllabi, I create a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, listing all deliverables for each class and organizing them by deadline dates.
Below is a screenshot of one of my past spreadsheets:

Developing an efficient study routine can help you save time and effectively balance competing priorities. Maintaining a structured approach to studying has helped me maximize my time, improve my focus, and achieve better results without feeling overwhelmed.
Below are some strategies I use frequently, that can help you streamline your study routine:
1. Incorporate the Pomodoro Technique: This technique involves using a 'Pomodoro Timer' while you work in short, focused intervals (25 minutes) followed by a short break (5 minutes). After repeating 3-4 times, work is followed by a longer break (15 minutes). I use this technique consistently and it helps me maintain concentration and prevent burnout.
2. Use Quizlet for active recall: When memorizing information, Quizlet is a game-changer. It lets you create flashcards and test yourself, making studying way more interactive. I find Quizlet most beneficial for its accessibility. Being available on the mobile app or internet, It’s perfect for squeezing in quick study sessions between classes or during a commute. (I use the free version).
3. Break down larger tasks: When setting goals and writing my to-do list, I make sure to break down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. For example, instead of aiming to review "everything after the midterm," I’ll set goals like "review chapter 7" and "review chapter 9." It might seem like a small change, but having these smaller, specific goals helps you stay motivated by giving you a sense of progress and accomplishment as you hit each milestone.
Don't forget to prioritize your well-being. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat healthy, and take breaks to recharge. A healthy body and mind are crucial for maintaining productivity and balance.
If you are dealing with mental or physical illness, the University of Ottawa's Student Health and Wellness Centre (SHWC) is a great local resource staffed by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals. Alternatively, full-time and part-time undergraduate students at the University of Ottawa have access to virtual health care 24/7, provided by Dialogue.
